How Do I Factor Rewatchability?
Factoring movies and DVDs into one of seven categories may not seem easy, but I apply a simple pseudo-science to my madness. After seeing a movie, I ask myself a couple questions:
Did I enjoy it?
Do I want to see it again?
How many times will I want to watch this by myself every five years?
How many times will I want to watch this with my family every five years?
How many times will I want to watch this with my friends every five years?
Based upon the answers to these questions, I classify the movie into one of the seven categories. The reason I break it down by "every five years" is, while I may not want to watch a movie once every year, two years, three or even four, if I don't want to watch the movie with one of those three groups every five years, I probably won't want to watch the movie ever again, and therefore, it would fall within the Unwatchable or Watchable categories.
Obviously, with this type of factoring and rating system, certain genres and types of films will be more highly ranked than others. Comedies, for instance, are always going to be more rewatchable than depressing dramas that leave you weeping like a baby at the end. It's just a fact. And while I wouldn't say that such dramas aren't worth seeing, or even buying and owning in your movie collection, I will say that you're probably not that antsy to pop those flicks in the old DVD player every chance you get. Take it or leave it, but that's my simple, pseudo-scientific rating system.
